The Concert
Beatrice Nicholas opens the concert with her piece Psalmus, before reimagining Schubert’s last piano sonata, D960, in her transcription The Schubert-Nicholas Sonata for Cello and Piano in B Flat Major.
Psalmus was written by Beatrice in the 2020 pandemic. It is based on an ancient plainsong that would be sung by Nottingham parishioners during the Middle Ages. Psalmus premiered at the 2020 Nottingham Chamber Music Festival, a few days before the city was declared ‘tier three’ and was locked down. It was featured on BBC Radio 3 a year later.
Following Psalmus is Beatrice’s transcription of the famous Schubert Piano Sonata in B Flat Major D 960, re-imagined by Beatrice as a new chamber music work for cello and piano. Her transcriptions for cello and piano were released in 2023 as an album called ‘Beatrice - Arrangements for Cello & Piano’.
